RECONSIDERING THE MARGIN
Graduate Seminar
This seminar introduces students to theoretical concepts of power, identity, place, and agency through readings and in-class discussion and juxtaposes these concepts with the experiences of residents in a specific place. The seminar challenges traditional methods of 'service-learning' by locating community members as primary knowledge-producers.
In addition to several community events planned with residents, students spend 2 hours/week in the community working in either the Home Improvement for Seniors program or the After School Program for children. The community and students identify a project that is implemented in the last 3 weeks of the semester. Students enrolled in the series take the Urban Issues Symposium in Semester 2 and design students have the option of continuing to the Design-Build Studio in Semester 3.
